tambour cupboards Tambour cupboards are a recent innovation in office furniture. They are an excellent means of storing files, as well as general office storage such as stationary, brochures, supplies etc. The key feature of a tambour cupboard is that the doors are made from slats and they roll into the top or the side of the cupboard.
Originally they rolled up into the top of the cupboard, but this has recently been superseded by side-rolling doors. The old vertical mechanisms were prone to failure, they took up a lot of space and, because of the height of the cupboard, could be difficult for people of below average height to manipulate. The newer side opening doors take up much less space and are much easier to use.
Tambour cupboards are available in a wide range of heights and widths, ranging from desk height units which sit at the end of a desk to full 2 metre high units for maximum storage volume. Standard widths range from 60cm to 120cm, but they can be custom made at any dimension, standard depth is usually 43cm. They normally have a system for adjustable shelves, so that the shelves can be placed where needed. Buyers need to be aware of how many shelves are included in the basic price of the tambour cupboard. Most of the CH Workspace tambour cupboards come complete with a full set of shelves, but some others do not. They can be an expensive addition to the cost if they are not included. Most of the CH Workspace shelves also have standard fittings on the underside so that they can take lateral filing systems with no additional equipment – a significant saving over other systems. A full range of options is also available, such as pull-out filing cradles and specialist shelves for computer media, cheque books etc.
Tambour cupboards are available in a range of materials, including wood, but the steel framed cupboards offer the best value for money and are the most robust. The steel shells can be obtained in Graphite, Aluminium, Light Grey or Silver and the tambour doors are available in a very wide range of finishes, from standard plain colours to match the shells to wood-effect finishes to match the rest of the office furniture. Decorative tops are available to ensure that the cupboard blends in to the rest of the furniture.
Our standard range of tambour cupboards is made from a rigid, pre-welded steel chassis and is designed for many years of safe, smooth operation. This means that access must be carefully considered when purchasing these tambour cupboards, you may find that the larger units will not fit in a stairwell or lift if they need to be installed on an upper floor. If this is the case, we have a range of flat-packed units which we will assemble and install for you. Tambour cupboards are usually in the range of £300 to £500 and are one of the most cost-effective solutions for filing and general office storage.
