Workspace CH Workspace are always on the lookout for new and interesting office furniture and related products and we were told about this one by our office refurbishment side of the business. They had just completed an
Art and design studio refurbishment and had used these innovative expandable walls to divide the main open plan areas into separate meeting spaces and break out areas
The concept is strikingly simple. What looks like a thick block of paper 2 metres high is in fact a flattened honeycomb of nonwoven polyethylene material, which can be pulled apart like a concertina to make a wall 3 to 4 metres long. The material is tear, water and UV resistance and fully recyclable
The end section of this huge paper wall is magnetic so that one section can be easily joined to the next. The gauge and stiffness of the honeycomb structure gives the whole wall exceptional stability and rigidity, especially when you consider what the product is.
Also, incorporating curves and corners into the layout makes the product even more rigid. The design of this partitioning system allow for some very organic curves and shapes and can really help to soften an office.
These “expanding walls “are available in a multitude of lengths, widths and heights, and can be joined vertically to form complex and interesting shapes. The material can be left in a natural off-white finish or processed to produce a brilliant white wall effect.
Being a semi vinyl product the material can be produced in virtually any colour, and can even be simply cut with scissors to produce doorways and windows as required.
This basic principle of expanded honeycomb sections has also been employed to create compound curve structures which are extremely strong and light. Soft seating, waiting- room benches, storage units and office seating have all been produced by the manufacturer to show how this product can be used.
Initially we see this product being used more in the design and art industries rather than main stream businesses, but there are many customers out there who could see how a product like this could make their life much easier.
Transforming a training room into a reception buffet for example, where all of the flip top tables and stackable chairs, which are not needed for the buffet, can be hidden from view behind an expandable wall such as this. Breakout areas could be easily divided into smaller cubicles for more privacy and to create a quieter, more relaxed environment.
Another valuable advantage of these expandable screening systems is that, whist not strictly a sound absorbing screen, the soft honeycomb structure and random shapes really can improve the acoustic properties of a work space.

These Demountable Partititonreally interest me as they sound very flexible and innovative. Though with you saying you are not targeting businesses, I am guessing the price range is too high at present. Perhaps with investment, you could produce in sufficiently large quantities to reduce the average cost per unit.

I’ve seen images of those before and they definitely made an impression. If I purchased one of these for an office environment I would go with a color other than white. I think people would be constantly fiddling with the expandable wall and this might leave grimy handprints on a pristine white surface. A nice beige wouldn’t darken a room too much but would take traffic a little better.
Thanks for posting this - I think I’ll be blogging about additional uses for the modern office environment soon.
