Office desks are available in a wide variety of range of styles, shapes, sizes and prices. It may be stating the obvious, but the first task in the process of buying office furniture is to be clear about what you want the office desks to do.

Questions you need to ask are:

  • How many people do I need to fit in the available space now, and how is that likely to change over time?

  • Do I need a flexible, modular system so that I can change the layout and workgroup pattern when I need to?

  • Is style important? Stylish desks are often, but not always, more expensive than standard, old-fashioned desks

  • Do I need continuity of supply so that I am sure of being able to obtain the same furniture if I need to add more in the future?

  • Do you need other items of office furniture to match the desks, eg filing systems, reception counters, meeting room furniture etc?

  • How quickly do I need the office furniture – some office furniture dealers have stocked products available for delivery and installation at short notice, other products are built to order and may take several weeks to be delivered.

Deciding on which range of office furniture to buy can be daunting, as there is such a variety to choose from, and it is difficult to find the ideal balance between price and quality.

Cheap desks and chairs may seem a good idea now, but you may regret it quite soon, when drawers start falling apart or chair mechanisms become unreliable. Sure you have a guarantee, but you still have to wait for an engineer to turn up, and then he will invariably have to order some spare parts, meaning more delay and inconvenience.

So you decide to go for better quality desks and really comfortable chairs, as you understand the importance of looking after your staff, but the total cost is a lot more that your budget.

Not wanting to tie up valuable capital (especially in the current economic climate) you need to consider how to you are going to treat your investment.

An unusual feature of the Vegas range of office furniture is that the central support beam is telecopic and adjusts to fit all standard sizes of desk top.

This has great advantages for a manufacturer and stock holder, in that only one type of frame needs to be stocked for the whole desking range. This makes is cheaper for them and they can pass this saving on to the customers.

This is reflected in the price of this range, with basic rectangular desks costing as little as £180, and this is for a fully welded steel framed desk with 25mm tops.

All of the desks in this range have a telescopic beam, which, once fixed at the desired length, then doubles up as the horizontal wire management tray.

The leg frames also have removable covers which allow the cables to be completely hidden away inside, from  the point they enter into the bottom of the leg-frame, to when they reappear on the desk-top.

The main leg section is constructed from folded and welded steel panels, and is  bolted to a stylish arched foot complete with floor level adjusters.

The desk tops are 25mm thick with 2mm protective edging, and this rests on two sturdy cantilevered steel brackets

Another unique feature of this desking range, is that the standard desk frame can be extended to support two desk tops, allowing the same framework to be used as the base for large meeting or training tables, or even a bench desking system.

Once again, one less leg frames means savings for the end user.

The telescopic central beam also has additional advantages when changes have to be made to your office space. If you need a bigger or smaller desk, you just need to specify the size you require, knowing that the frame you already have can be easily adjusted to fit.

Combine this with the fact that the leg frames can also be specified as height adjustable for a very small additional cost, and you really have got a desking system which is virtually future-proof.

All standard desk tops and cantilever support brackets are double drilled, so that the desks can be made into stand alone units or linked together, with shared legs, to produce efficient groups of desks.

The range of finishes are identical to all of our stocked ranges of office furniture. A choice of aluminium or graphite for the steel frames, and either light grey, beech, cherry, or pear finish for the desk tops.

Apart from the main desks, which are available in rectangular, wave, radial , and even large symmetrical radial shapes, there is also a wide choice of matching storage units available, including steel and wood finish desk height and mobile pedestals, tambour units and 2 door cupboards.

Individual meeting tables or meeting extensions are also available as are modesty panels, CPU holders , desk shelves and office screens, and all of the other complimentary items which you would expect from a versatile range such as Vegas

Vegas offers a wide range of products, amazing versatility, and real value for money.

Budget desks at budget prices

These days most business are feeling the pinch, having been affected in some way by the current worldwide recession. But although there is pressure to spend less money, there is even more pressure to ensure that you get good value for money.

In this respect you have to be very careful with your office furniture purchase, making sure that it is really suited for your purpose, and that it is well built and will last for the length of time you anticipate it to.

This is where a dealer will be able to help you choose the right product or range at the right price. It makes more sense in the current climate to lease your  furniture, than to buy it outright. That way you are able to keep hold of your cash, and there are some significant tax advantages to leasing your capital equipment rather than buying it.

But having said all of that, there are times when all you need is a couple of cheap desks which will do the job for now, and you want them quickly.

This is where the ML20 range comes in

Traditional wood veneer office furniture has always been at the top end of the price scale, mainly due to the fact that wood veneer is an expensive product to make and use.

But modern man made finishes are so realistic nowadays that they are the sensible choice for budget conscious buyers. It is a well know fact that they are more durable, won’t fade in direct sunlight, are virtually stain proof and heat proof. They are also easier to clean and to look after, and incredibly resistant to scratching.

But the best bit is that they are considerable cheaper than wood veneer executive furniture. This, together with the fact that they are usually available from stock, whereas the veneer option is usually made to order with a lead time of 6 to 8 weeks, makes the decision even easier.

Everyone is affected by the current difficult times, but don’t get carried away with the so called bargains which are being offered.  Even now, you really do get what you pay for.
The Far East has seen the effect of the world slowdown, and are selling off lots of old stock at  ridiculous prices; UK dealers are then selling this stuff on at absolute minimum margins, just to keep the cash flowing. So you may pay a lot less than you expected, but in the longer term the hidden costs will catch up with you. A limited guarantee and the lack of spare parts will mean that your great office furniture deal will reach its end of useful life much sooner than you expected.

The simple answer is yes you can, as you are doing yourself what someone else would be paid to do, so you can save their cost. But as with everything else, you need to ask if you want to save money this way. Maybe you are the type of person who services their own car, or performs minor surgery at home, in which case putting together some furniture will be a doddle.

But if you are like the rest of us, who tremble when the phrase flat-pack is mentioned, and your toolkit consists of the spanners you got with the lawnmower and some screwdrivers you bought from a stand at an agricultural show because they were cheap, then you need to consider very carefully what you are taking on. Office furniture is heavy, awkward, and easy to damage. It is designed to be assembled by professionals who know the products, which means no instruction manuals or diagrams. And you will only get enough fixings to do the job, and these will be unique to that range. You won’t find a replacement at B&Q.

The first question you need to ask is how much service do I need. If price is the most important criteria and you are happy to do your own research, put the furniture together and get rid of the packaging yourself then one of the many furniture stores or on line “box shifters” will be fine for you. You may have to collect your goods (and take them back if there is a problem) but you will certainly save money.

If you are running a busy office, and want to delegate the whole experience then you need to talk to an office furniture dealer. Continue reading »
