The entry level of office shelving is our multi-purpose shelving range, available with either blue or dark grey uprights and grey shelves. The system comprises a starter unit, with 4 uprights, to which can be added any number of add-on units.

These add-on units share two of the starter units uprights which increases storage space and keeps the overall costs down.  Each bay is around a metre in width and is supplied in standard heights of 100, 200 or 240 cm, although the uprights can be cut to any length on request.

Probably the most common problem we encounter in today’s office is that there is never enough storage space. Clients often want to cram more staff into the office and forget that more people and more work usually create more filing and there is nowhere to put it. So we need to look at space efficient and creative storage solutions.

The much loved filing cabinet is still in use in many offices but often only because no one has explained the many alternatives available. Filing cabinets have to be the most space inefficient product available for offices and I always do my best to steer clients away from them.

The problem is that at 60cm deep and only around 135cm high, plus allowing another 60cm to open the drawers, filing cabinets take up a huge amount of floor space and are always used as a dumping ground for rubbish.

Noise in an office can be incredibly disruptive and cause stress and loss of productivity and should therefore be taken very seriously. Particularly in large open plan offices where everyone is on the phone competing to be heard and the hum of fax machines, copiers and printers is ever present, noise levels can become intolerable. Add into the mix the always present member of staff constantly shouting over everyone else and you can see something needs to be done. Sometimes you can’t find any standard office furniture product which will fit in the space you have, or will do what you want it to do, and its such a small job that most office furniture dealers won’t be interested in quoting to make it for you. Rather than give up or compromise have you thought about making what you want yourself.

It does help if you are a practical person, but even if not, you probably know someone who is and could be coaxed into helping.
Desk frames and tubular legs can be bought from furniture dealers, or from specific office furniture component manufacturers such as Hafele or Heltich. If you can stand the queues Ikea have a reasonable range of table legs and tops, and some of the larger DIY superstores often have a good range.

The above mentioned component manufacturers are also a good bet for cable ports, cable tidies and trays, drawer internals and locks etc, so you really are only limited by your own skills. Continue reading »
