Office furniture manufacture – new technology For many years office furniture has been manufactured from board made from compressed woodchip and resin, with a MFC, laminate or veneer finish. Although using woodchip is considered reasonably environmentally friendly as it is itself a waste product some manufacturers have been looking into viable alternatives. One of which has been pioneered by a German manufacturer who has developed a process whereby large volumes or sorted waste plastic and tin foil is compressed at high pressures and heat to produce a flat board about 25mm thick. This board is as strong as traditionally built desk, and can be machined and edged in exactly the same way. Coloured resins can be used to give the board a uniform finish. At present the process uses a lot of energy but it is expected that with increased volumes the process will become very energy efficient. In the future your desk may be made out of yesterday’s breakfast rubbish.
