Technical details of desk construction (part 1)
Most entry level and contract furniture is made in a similar way using industry standard fixings which are usually supplied by just one or two companies. The desk top, which is usually made from melamine faced chipboard, is fitted with screw inserts which are designed to take 4,6, or 8mm bolts or set screws, depending on the application.
These inserts are fitted by first drilling an 8 or 10mm hole into the underside of the desktop, and then countersinking the top. The insert is a small aluminium tube, which has a standard 1.0 pitch internal thread, and a very course external thread, designed to cut into the edge of the drilled hole. These inserts are incredibly strong and transmit the loads and forces into the desk top. It is very rare for one of these inserts to fail in normal use
