Desk top finishes – an overview
In general there are 3 types of desk top finish. The first is MFC or Melamine Faced Chipboard, which is a dual density chipboard covered in a thin layer of wood patterned or coloured paper, impregnated with hot melamine ( plastic) liquid which then sets rock hard.
The second is a laminate which is again a dual density board onto both sides of which are glued laminate sheets ( thin plastic sheets with an impregnated colour or pattern )
The surface is much thicker than MFC and therefore more hardwearing.
The third is a wood veneer where very thin slices of real wood are cut to produce large sheets of wood veneer which are then glued to a substrate of either chipboard or MDF.
