Office safety – Desks. Most desks are designed to provide many years of problem free service, and to accept a certain amount of abuse. Window cleaners and decorators have sometimes been caught standing on the desks and staff often use the desk to change light bulbs or hang Christmas decorations. Whilst none of these acitivities would be condoned by Health and Safety, most steel frames desks have been built to withstand this level of occasional load. In contrast older 18mm desks with structural modesty panels ( the desk fixings are screwed into threaded inserts which are held in place by chipboard) would often collapse under this sort of load, with terrible consequences. Most office furniture dealers would not want to offer their customers any products which might fail, even from misuse or abuse, and it is therefore wise to consult them prior to your purchase.
