Desk technology
The office desk has changed shape a few times in the last 200 years and has been made from a wide range of materials, but it has remained in simple terms, a flat surface on which to write. Technology is starting to make the desk do more for the user.
In many of the office furniture Design shows we have seen desks with integral plasma screens, IPod and headphone connections, and built in speakers. Many designers are building cooling systems into the cabling area of their desks to help prolong the lives of PCs and laptops. One designer has even promoted a refrigerated pedestal drawer system so that the user can keep their water and sandwiches cold during the day.
Some of these inventions may seem silly or far fetched, but it does show how designers are looking to make the humble desk do more for its users.
