File storage - Suspension or lateral filing A number of our customers are often confused by the difference between the two type of files. Suspension files hang from a frame and the contents of the hanging holder are accessed from the top if the filing pocket. The hooks from which the pocket hangs are at either end of the hanging file. Suspension filing is usually carried on frames which are mounted on extendable runners, so that the whole cradle can be pulled out from the cabinet. Lateral filing is hung from a static cradle or shelf and the contents of the pocket are accessed from the front. The labels on suspension files usually run horizontally along the top edge of the file, as opposed to lateral filing where the labels run vertically up the front face of the file.
