Going green with office furniture Most office furniture manufacturers take the green issue very seriously. No one uses non sustainable wood veneers any more, but instead take oak or light wood veneers and stain them to look like rosewood or some of the rarest mahoganies. The process of making man made finishes has been improved to reduce the use of so many of the environmentally unfriendly chemicals, and where possible to use recycle woodchip and plastics. The furniture has been designed to last longer and cope more effectively with changes in technology or social habits. Packaging has also changed to be more environmentally friendly. More recycled cardboard is used and much less polystyrene foams and plastics. All of this however has to be carefully balanced with costs in order to compete with cheap imports from the Far East where ecology may not be taken quite so seriously
